Abstract
This article examines the specifics of Russian-Japanese relations since the start of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022. Russia and Japan took diametrically opposed political positions on the Ukrainian conflict, which led to a sharp deterioration in bilateral political and economic relations, the introduction of mutual sanctions, and the creation of a negative atmosphere in public opinion. Nevertheless, humanitarian contacts between the two countries continue in the areas of culture, education, science, and sports. This provides a basis for maintaining ties at the level of people-to-people diplomacy and allows for the consideration of prospects for restoring and normalizing relations between Russia and Japan after the removal of impeding factors. It is also proposed to build cooperation at the current stage with an emphasis on developing humanitarian contacts, which should ultimately contribute to the development of optimal methods for restoring Russian-Japanese relations.
