Abstract
The four initiatives put forward by President of the PRC Xi Jinping – development (2021), security (2022), civilization (2023), and global governance (2025) – have become a concrete embodiment of his global project of building a community with a shared future for mankind (2015) conceived as a mega-project for the peaceful development amid tectonic shifts, global turbulence, and digital globalization in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). Within the framework of these initiatives of a “peaceful China”, which seeks harmony both domestically and internationally, China is also promoting another major proposal within BRICS, namely the Global AI Governance Initiative (2023). The purpose of this article is to identify the specific features of advancing Xi Jinping’s Global AI Governance Initiative within the BRICS countries on the basis of China’s technological, conceptual – essentially existential – and strategic achievements in the field of AI, as well as to provide a constructive assessment of this process. The article reveals the internal heterogeneity and uneven development of AI within the BRICS countries and identifies the institutional framework of BRICS cooperation in the sphere of global AI governance. The interdisciplinary theoretical and methodological foundation of the study lies in the integration of political, technological, world-economic discourses and institutional analysis. The practical significance of the research findings is connected with the further dissemination and deepening of the principles of China’s peaceful Global AI Governance Initiative within BRICS and beyond, on the basis of fairness and inclusiveness.
